In brief

Ongoing consent means the freedom to ask, adjust and stop the practice. Initial agreement does not remove this freedom.

A conversation, not a formality

In a somatic relaxation session, consent begins before the first exercise. It is a conversation about what will happen, the proposed pace and the possibility of changing that pace. The participant needs clear information, time for questions and freedom to choose. A form can record initial agreement, but cannot replace attention between people. The written framework and the living conversation serve different purposes and complement each other.

Ongoing consent does not mean that an agreement given at the beginning automatically applies to every moment. It remains open throughout the meeting. A preference can change, an exercise can feel unsuitable, or a pause may be needed. None of these changes requires a personal explanation. A communicated boundary is enough and deserves to be respected.

How to express a boundary

Boundaries can be expressed simply: “I would prefer a slower pace”, “I want to take a break” or “I do not want to continue this exercise”. There is no perfect phrase a participant must learn. A clear framework makes these options easy to express without pressure. The practitioner can periodically check whether the pace is appropriate and offer neutral alternatives. A question should leave room for a genuine answer, not suggest there is only one acceptable choice.

Listening to the response is just as important. A request for a pause is not an obstacle or a failure of the session. It is information about the person’s preferences at that moment. Respecting it preserves participant autonomy and a clear professional relationship. No promise of progress and no time pressure justifies crossing a communicated boundary.

“A “yes” remains free only when there is always room for a “no”.”

The role of the initial conversation

Before practice, the initial conversation can clarify duration, the types of exercises, how to request pauses and how the meeting ends. It helps participants know their options without having to infer them. Explanations should be accessible, free of jargon and relevant to concrete questions. Space for reflection is part of the process, not wasted time.

This conversation is not an invitation to share unnecessary personal information. Discretion means asking only for what is relevant to the proposed framework and explaining why. Participants can ask how information is used and who has access to it. Consents for communication, data and practice are separate; accepting one does not mean accepting the others.

After the session, the same respect

At the end, feedback can remain brief and freely given. A person can say what suited them, what they would change, or choose not to offer details. A closing conversation should not demand enthusiasm or turn an individual experience into a general promise. Somatic practice is presented here as contemporary education and wellness, not treatment.

A good framework maintains the same care before, during and after a session. Ongoing consent means attention to the person present, not just to a signed document. It means clear questions, respected pauses and choices that remain the participant’s own. Electronic acceptance does not replace ongoing consent during the session. This is a simple but essential principle for a discreet, responsible and clearly bounded experience.
